It has been reported that the UK government is testing plans to help cope with power outages that could last up 7 days. According to The Guardian reports, exercises have been held with the various government departments and councils in the country over recent days.
Programme Yarrow was created in 2021 in order to improve planning for the eventuality of a major electrical fault on the national grid. In the worst case scenario, all sectors may lose power supply for upto a week.

All premises in that situation will experience power outages without warning. 60% electricity demand is met between day 2 and 7, with houses and businesses receiving “intermittent” access.

Only analogue FM radios could work if this happens. BBC Radio 2/4 would not be able broadcast. Even in the worst-case scenario the newspaper reported that power would soon be restored.
The plan will be used if there is a serious emergency such as that described by UK electricity last month. It warned of rolling three-hour blackouts in the worst-case scenario.

“As responsible government, it is right to plan for all scenarios and work with industry in order to prepare and exercise robust contingency planning. This is a vital strand of our national resilience plan and it is ongoing,” UK government said to Sky News.
“Local, national and emergency exercises are part this ongoing work. They ensure that we are able respond effectively to all of a wide variety of scenarios, regardless how unlikely they might be,” the statement added.
